Service Class

All references to EN 1995-1-1:2004+A2:2014. Eurocode 5 requires that timber structures are assigned to a "Service Class". The Service Class specifies conditions of temperature and relative humidity of the surrounding air, which in turn affect the moisture content of the timber. The Service Class system is used mainly to modify the characteristic strength and moduli of elasticity values.

The Service Classes are:

Service Class Description
1 Temperature exceeding 20 °C and relative humidity exceeding 65% only for a few weeks a year.
2 Temperature exceeding 20 °C and relative humidity exceeding 85% only for a few weeks a year.
3 Conditions that lead to more moisture than Service Class 2.

Please refer to Clause 2.3.1.3 for a detailed discussion.
